there is reason to expect emotion to have a significant impact on trust. Emotions have been shown to affect a variety of decision making processes and complex decisions[,] such as the decision required to trust political leaders with regional or national management… . [Such decisions] are particularly likely to be influenced by a person’s emotional state. (p. 1)

With this understanding it is easy to see how political leaders need to understand the impact of emotionally charged messages on their ability to build trust and credibility with the public.
